Mr. B.K.S. Iyengar

Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar, a foremost authority on the subject in the current era, has made it possible for ordinary human beings from all walks of life to experience the wisdom of the yoga sutras. Unlike the scholars and academicians who articulate the meaning and syntax of the sutras in terms of speculative concepts, Yogacharya Iyengar finds the meaning of the sutras by practical search and regular practice, experimenting on himself before sharing his experiential knowledge amongst his students.

His style of teaching yoga which is now being followed by teachers trained by him has led to it being called as "Iyengar Yoga". Thus, yoga as taught by Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar and his students is "Iyengar Yoga".

Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute

As a part of ongoing professional development, teachers are encouraged to attend four weeks of public classes periodically at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI) in Pune, India. Public classes are taught by Geeta Iyengar, Prashant Iyengar and other senior teachers from the Institute, with input from Mr. Iyengar. For teachers who are conducting teacher training courses and workshops, four trips to RIMYI or their equivalent are required to qualify as a teacher trainer.

Given the world wide popularity of Iyengar yoga and the demand for student places in the public classes at RIMYI, applications are coordinated through national Iyengar organizations like the IYAC. To obtain more information and/or an application form, contact Marlene Mawhinney. Applicants must expect a waiting period of one and a half to two years before space becomes available.

A deposit of $150 US is required with each application form, and the balance of $300 US is paid at the institute.

To learn more about studying at the RIMYI and the experiences of Canadian teachers, please read the articles in Pune Experiences.
