IYAC/ACYI President thanks our visiting teachers and volunteers.

On behalf of IYAC/ACYI I would like to extend deep gratitude for the teachings of both Dr. Rajlaxmi Nidmarti and Raya Uma Datta during this year's AGM/conference. They brought with them their understanding of Guruji's work and presented it to us in a precise, clear and vibrant format. I think I speak for all of us in attendance that the teaching was brilliant in it's simplicity and yet was profound in its effect. It was wonderful to have the opportunity to study with these two senior teachers from Pune and to immerse ourselves in Guruji's teachings for 5 days. From the morning pranayama classes, to the lectures and asana classes we were given a very fulfilling experience.

In addition I wish to thank again all the volunteers from the Toronto community who put this conference together. From the search for a venue to the coordination of volunteers, from the organization of promotion and putting together of prop packages, it was a job well done. We appreciate your tireless efforts in putting this huge event together for our members. They say many hands make small work and I know that there were many hands involved in all aspects of this conference. Thank you all for your efforts in helping to make this conference a great success.

During the conference Leigh Milne, our newsletter editor asked for comments on your experience of this year's conference. Please take the time to put  your experience into words. These comments will be included in the next edition of IYAC/ACYI News. Your experience will then be shared with those who were unable to attend. We look forward to reading your comments in the next newsletter.

My husband attended two yoga classes with me, but he wasn’t keen on being the only guy in the class. He also says the moves and methods didn’t quite work for him. Is there a form of yoga that is more geared to men?

“There are yoga practices that speak to men a little more than other forms, even some that include moves that specifically benefit the prostate,” says Marlene Mawhinney, who teaches at the Yoga Centre of Toronto.  “I suggest he try Iyengar yoga, which is a precise, systematic method that works on the principle of meditation in action. There’s a structuredness to this type of yoga. I’ve noticed a large number of accountants and engineers in our Iyengar classes, people who often think in a structured way and who prefer the logical flow and specific steps.”

Practitioners concentrate on the asanas (postures) that can improve mobility, stability, strength and alignment. Iyengar yoga uses props (chairs, blocks, blankets and straps) to deepen poses or to help correct alignment. “This is particularly helpful for men who do other strength-based sports and are stiff,” adds Mawhinney. Iyengar yoga will appeal to anyone wanting to develop a strong foundation for lifelong flexibility, but especially to the uninitiated man who craves pragmatic instruction and is wary of yoga's woo-woo side

On a sunny Saturday morning, my husband and I went to our first Iyengar yoga class – and his first yoga class, ever – at The Yoga Space, located just behind the Olympic Village on False Creek in Vancouver.

It took me 14 years to convince him to come to a yoga class and it was worth the wait because there could not have been a better class for his introduction. The class (and Iyengar in general) was very different from any other kind of yoga I’ve experienced, from Moksha to Ashtanga to Kundalini.
